For many of us, the challenge of finding restful sleep is a nightly struggle. Tossing and turning, staring at the ceiling, and watching the hours tick by can become a routine that leaves one feeling more exhausted than refreshed come morning. It’s a scenario that Emma Collins, a 35-year-old marketing executive from Bristol, knows all too well. In an enlightening conversation, Emma shares how she discovered a soothing solution in yoga, transforming her sleepless nights into serene slumbers.

Emma’s journey began several months ago when she found herself increasingly unable to drift off into restful sleep. “I was dealing with a lot of stress from work,” she recounts. “I’d lie awake, my mind racing with unfinished tasks and looming deadlines. It was as though my brain refused to switch off.”
Desperate for a remedy, Emma turned to various solutions—herbal teas, white noise machines, even over-the-counter sleep aids. But it wasn’t until a friend suggested yoga that she found something truly transformative. “I was sceptical at first,” Emma admits. “Yoga seemed too passive, and I wasn’t convinced it would actually help with sleep.”
However, the promise of a peaceful night’s rest encouraged Emma to give it a try. She began with some research and stumbled upon the idea that yoga, with its gentle movements and focus on mindfulness, could be the key to calming both body and mind before bed.
Emma started her practice with three poses recommended by a yoga instructor she found online—Supported Child’s Pose, Supported Goddess Pose, and Legs Up the Wall. Each pose, she discovered, was not just about physical flexibility but also about mental relaxation.
“Supported Child’s Pose was my first attempt,” Emma recalls. “I set up a thick pillow on my bed and let myself fold forward, my head resting comfortably. It was like a gentle embrace that whispered for me to let go of the day’s stress.”
As she settled into the pose, Emma found herself focusing on her breath, a technique integral to yoga practice. “I realised that breathing deeply and slowly was like telling my body it was time to relax. It was surprisingly effective in quieting my thoughts.”
Next, she tried the Supported Goddess Pose, a gentle hip-opener that required her to sit with her feet together and knees apart, using pillows for support. “The stretch felt liberating,” Emma shares. “It wasn’t intense, but it was enough to release tension I didn’t even know I was holding.”
Finally, Emma experienced the Legs Up the Wall pose—a simple, yet impactful practice where she lay on her back with her legs resting up against a wall. “This pose quickly became my favourite,” she confides. “It felt like a reset for my entire system, easing the day’s weight from my legs and encouraging a sense of calm.”
Emma incorporated these poses into her nightly routine, dedicating about fifteen minutes before bed to her practice. The results were almost immediate. “I noticed within a week that I was not only falling asleep faster but also staying asleep through the night,” she says with a smile. “My mornings were no longer groggy; I felt genuinely rested.”
Beyond the physical benefits, Emma discovered that yoga also offered a mental reprieve. “It taught me to be present, to let go of the day’s worries even if just for a moment,” she explains. “That sense of mindfulness carried over into other parts of my life, making me more focused and less anxious overall.”
Emma advises others who struggle with sleep to consider yoga as a valuable tool. “It’s accessible to everyone,” she says encouragingly. “You don’t need to be a yoga expert or have fancy equipment. It’s about finding what feels good for your body and mind.”
Her experience is a testament to the power of integrating gentle exercise with mindfulness practices to achieve better sleep. As Emma continues to enjoy the benefits of her yoga routine, she hopes to inspire others to explore this path to relaxation and restfulness.
In sharing her journey, Emma Collins not only reveals the transformative power of yoga for sleep but also offers a glimmer of hope to those caught in the cycle of sleeplessness. Her story serves as a reminder that sometimes, the simplest solutions are the most effective, guiding us gently back to the restorative embrace of a good night’s sleep.
