Orangery Wellness: Essential Maintenance

An orangery isn’t just an extension of your home; it’s a sanctuary that blends indoor comfort with the beauty of the outdoors. To fully harness its potential for enhancing wellness and health, regular maintenance is key. Here’s how you can keep your orangery in prime condition:

1. Keep the Glass Clean and Clear

Regularly cleaning your orangery’s glass panels ensures maximum natural light and a clear view of the outdoors. Use a non-abrasive glass cleaner with a soft sponge or cloth to avoid scratching. For higher sections, a telescopic cleaning tool is helpful. To prevent water spots, clean on an overcast day when the sun won’t dry the solution too quickly. (sunlightconservatories.co.uk)

2. Inspect and Maintain Frames and Seals

Over time, frames can gather dust, dirt, and grime, especially if your orangery has uPVC, aluminum, or wood frames. Wipe the frames monthly with a damp cloth and mild detergent to keep them clean. Avoid harsh chemicals that could damage the material. Check for any signs of wear, cracks, or peeling paint, as these may require repair or repainting to preserve the frames’ longevity. 3. Maintain Temperature and Ventilation

An orangery can quickly become too hot in summer and too cold in winter, so effective temperature management keeps the space comfortable. During hot months, use blinds, shades, or curtains to block excessive sunlight and prevent overheating. In colder months, heaters or radiators can help warm the room. Consider installing a ceiling fan or air conditioning unit for year-round temperature control if your climate varies significantly. (sthelenswindows.com)

4. Care for the Flooring

Orangeries connect indoor and outdoor spaces, making them prone to tracked-in dirt and dust. Regularly sweep the floor to remove debris, and mop with a suitable cleaner every week or two to maintain a clean, inviting surface. For hardwood floors, use a gentle, wood-safe cleaner, while tile or stone floors benefit from a pH-neutral solution to avoid damage. (sthelenswindows.com)

5. Tend to Indoor Plants

Orangeries create a perfect environment for plants, but maintaining them requires regular attention. Water plants according to their needs, keeping in mind that the sun-filled space may cause soil to dry faster than in other rooms. Avoid overwatering by checking the soil moisture levels and ensuring that each plant’s drainage requirements are met. (sthelenswindows.com)

6. Enhance Air Quality with Greenery

Incorporating plants into your orangery can improve air quality and create a tranquil environment. Species like Peace Lilies and Spider Plants are particularly effective at removing toxins. Being surrounded by greenery can reduce stress and promote relaxation. The act of caring for plants also has therapeutic effects. (hallmarkglazedextensions.co.uk)

7. Manage Condensation and Humidity

Condensation can lead to mold and dampness, affecting both the structure and your health. To manage condensation, ensure proper ventilation by opening windows and using roof vents. In winter, consider using a dehumidifier to control moisture levels, especially if you use the space as a kitchen or drying area. (sunlightconservatories.co.uk)

8. Regularly Clean Roof and Gutters

Your orangery’s roof has a good deal of glass that needs to be regularly cleaned and maintained, and it’s also important that it all drains properly. That’s why it’s crucial to keep your gutters clean and in good repair and your downspouts directed away from the foundation. Regularly inspect the roof and gutters, looking for roof damage like loose tiles or leaks and gutter issues like debris and clogs. Address any problems promptly, before further damage can occur to your roof or water damage can impact your orangery. (eliments.co.uk)

9. Protect and Care for Your Furniture

In your orangery, room to express yourself through your furnishings is one of the perks. Keep the furniture, flooring, and interior finishes in the orangery looking their best by cleaning, dusting, and polishing to preserve their appearance and increase their longevity. Be careful of the effects of sunlight on your furniture and take measures to protect it, whether by covering furniture or employing some type of sun protection. (eliments.co.uk)

10. Schedule Regular HVAC Maintenance

Make sure that your orangery is properly ventilated, to prevent condensation and ensure it remains a comfortable environment. Have your HVAC system regularly serviced by a professional and make sure the vents, air ducts, and fans stay clean and well-maintained, to ensure optimal airflow. (eliments.co.uk)

By following these maintenance tips, you can ensure your orangery remains a healthy, comfortable, and inviting space for years to come.

  1. An orangery sounds divine! I’m especially intrigued by the suggestion of incorporating plants for air quality. Do you have any recommendations for varieties that are low-maintenance but pack a punch in terms of air purification? Asking for a friend… who is me, and I am very lazy.

    • Great question! Since you mentioned low-maintenance air purifiers, snake plants (Sansevieria) and ZZ plants are fantastic options. They tolerate neglect and still do a wonderful job cleaning the air. Plus, they add a stylish touch to your orangery!

  2. Regular roof and gutter cleaning, you say? Does one require special orangery-cleaning stilts, or is a drone with a tiny squeegee now a justifiable expense? Asking for a friend… who also has high ceilings.

    • That’s a fantastic question! While we haven’t quite reached the drone squeegee stage (yet!), telescopic cleaning tools with specialized attachments are definitely worth considering. They make reaching those high areas much safer and easier. Stilts sound a bit precarious! Let’s hope the drone option becomes a reality soon.
